What is the difference between crochet, knit and woven bags?
Crochet is made by hand with a single hook, loop by loop. Knitting forms rows of interlocking loops – by hand or, for our bags, on computerised machines. Weaving interlaces two sets of yarns at right angles on a loom, as in canvas or straw. Crochet and knit stretch; woven fabric hardly does.
Which is best for wholesale orders?
| Hand crochet | Machine knit | Woven (canvas / straw) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consistency | Varies by maker | Same in every piece | Same in every piece |
| Capacity | Limited by hand labour | Scales with machines | Scales with looms |
| Look | Hand-made texture | Crochet, jacquard or sporty | Flat or basket texture |
| Logo | Sewn label or patch | Knitted in, label or patch | Printed, embroidered or label |
Can a machine-knitted bag look like crochet?
Yes. Knitting programmes can reproduce open, textured and bobble effects that read as crochet, while keeping the size and tension identical across an order. That is why many 'crochet-look' bags in retail are machine knitted.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tell customers my bag is hand made?
Only if it is. Machine-knitted bags should be described as knitted or crochet-look, not hand made.
Which lasts longer?
It depends on yarn and construction more than on the method; a dense machine knit with a lining is very durable for daily use.
